Evaluation of the lavender bag

The lavender bag is now finished and I am going to evaluate it now.

How can I test my solution?

I can test my solution by:

• I could test against the specifications

• I could ask my client what he liked or disliked about it

• I could have a survey about it

• I could ask other people about it

• I could shake it to see if lavender comes out

• I could have a smell test

I chose to ask others and ask the client.

I also tested it against the specifications.

It did meet all of my success criterion/design specifications.

I must use at least 3 techniques I have learned -  I used 7, tie dye, hand embroider, machine embroidery, wax coloring, spray painting, appliqué and fabric painting

I must include tie dye - yes

I must include embroidery - yes

I must include machine sewing - yes

the bag will have an animal theme - yes

the bag will be made using 2 pieces sewn onto the 2 pieces for the background - yes

the front and the back of my bag must be tie-dyed by me - yes

But it did not meet my design drawing.

The differences were - 

• my bag's snail had lime green eyes that were supposed to black
• the decorative dots were laid out differently
• the shell was not painted, it was colored

The reasons are -

After I gave it to the client, I took their interview and this is what the client said - 

• it smells good
• the snail is good
• the stitching could be improved
• why is it a snail and not anything else
• the color concept is good

I asked one of my classmates how they thought the bag was and this is what the classmate said - 

• it is cool
• the hand embroidery is good and neat
• the stitching of the snail could be improved by making it neater and narrower
• the outside stitching could be done better because it uneven from some parts

I asked Ms. Van Der Steege to give me feedback and this is what she said - 

• the bag had many techniques in evolved in it
• it was neat
• it was colorful
• it was very attractive
• trimming all the small pieces of thread after made
• the stitching could be done neater and straighter 
• while overlapping the stitches you could overlap them even neatly

I think that I did a good job and the sewing could be done better.

Next time I could have done the stitching better. I could have done the snail a little better. Maybe I would try something different. I could maybe make the stitching of the snail more dense and narrow. I could carefully cut the extra pieces of thread. I could for the border stitching keep the stitches even from the edges by drawing out the lines to stitch on.

Creating the solution

I am going to create the bag.

• I will cut out the body of my snail. I will need the paper pieces I cut out earlier, pair of scissors

• I will paint them. I will need a paintbrush, green and orange paints

• I will tie - dye the front and the back of my bag. I will need red, yellow and blue dyes, 2 hooks, a drying rack

• I will appliqué my shell and body and then sew it. I will need black thread, a sewing machine, appliqué, an iron, an ironing board

• Then I will embroider the mouth, eyes, and the decorative dots. I will need black thread, red thread, yellow thread, blue thread, green thread, an embroidering needle

• I will put the good sides together and sew the sides together leaving one side open. I will need a sewing machine, black thread, pins to keep my bag in place while sewing

• I will turn it inside in and iron it nicely. I will need an iron, an ironing board.

• I will put lavender in the bag and sew the edges to get the final product. I will need lavender, a sewing machine, black thread

I have now cut out the body and the shell as fabric and painted them as they should be according to my plan.

Then I tie-dyed my 1st piece of fabric and then the second one.

This is my first and second pieces of fabric dyed and dried.

After that I decided my front and back pieces of my lavender bag and then ironed my shell and body of the snail by putting some applique between the two.

Then I sew these as the plan said

Then I hand embroidered the eyes, mouth and the decoration dots

Then I ironed it.

After ironing it I turned it inside out and sew the edges of my bag leaving one edge.

Then I turned it inside in.

                                        

                                       

 Then I gave it nice iron.

                                     

Then I put some lavender inside.

Then I sew the remaining edge and I was done. (finished product).

DESIGN

These are my initial ideas. I chose this because -

• it can be made using 2 pieces sewn onto the main bag
• it does not need so much space and can fit into about half of an a4 sheet of paper
• it has an animal theme
• it can be made on a regular rectangular shape
• I can use a minimum of 3 techniques to make it
• it can have a tie dye background

This is approximately the size of my bag and the design that would be sewn on to it.

After I made the final design I traced out the two pieces I would need to make my bag and cut them out.

Then I arranged the pieces to make my shape.

This is the step in which I placed the two pieces on a piece of paper and getting an idea of approximately how big my bag will be.

Inquiring and analysing

Why are we doing this and for whom?

We are making a lavender bag and we will gift it to someone. We will learn different techniques of decorating a piece of fabric. We will try -

• Sewing
• Hand embroidery
• Tie dye and
• Batik

Research plan

Primary – we will try to create the decorative designs ourselves and try different techniques.

Secondary – we will look up different lavender bags on the internet and look at tutorials of the techniques.

                                               Analysing existing  lavender bags

This this is a collection of cute and easy to make bags. They are all hanging which means they can go anywhere.

These are also really cut and have great impression. It is easy to make but the colouring part is difficult. This looks 3-D  and realistic.

This is a really cute set of bags. They are easy to make, and they can hang. They are pretty and will be good for decorations.

This is the sample of batik I made. It did not come out good and it was ugly.

This is is a sample I made of using wax crayons for fabric. It was good.

This is this is a sample of my stitching practice. It was fun and I am confident to use a sewing machine now.

This this is a sample of tie dye I made and I am going to use this for my lavender bag.
